Did You Know? Monthly History Article (excerpt from Maple Ridge – A History of Settlement)

The building of the Lougheed Highway begun in 1928, which accelerated the town core’s move uphill. Nelson Lougheed, provincial member for the Dewdney Riding during the Tolmie administration of 1928, became Minister of Public Works. Under his direction the Lougheed Highway was built from Coquitlam through to Sumas. When the highway was completed in 1931, the Fuller-Watson department store was the first business to relocate on the top of the hill in the building they still occupy. Next came the Bank of Montreal, soon followed by other firms. Eventually the municipal hall, the post office, and even the Catholic and United churches rebuilt on the upper level.

South Bonson Community Centre – Now Open

The new South Bonson Community Centre located at 10932 Barnston Road in Pitt Meadows was officially opened on September 17. The public open house included the opening ceremony and a welcome by Katzie First Nations, recreation and arts program demonstrations, children’s games, tours, community information and the installation of the Spirit of Wood Festival Carving.
