Did You Know? Monthly History Article (excerpt from Maple Ridge – A History of Settlement)
It is hard to believe that the quiet business section on Maple Crescent in present-day Hammond was once busy and prosperous, rivalling Haney in size and importance. The Hammond brothers foresaw a promising future for a town on their strategically located land, with its river access. It is said that the Hammonds gave Canadian Pacific Railway several acres of land for the rail line, station, and yards on the condition that their town be the site of the first railway station in Haney. The town was registered at the courthouse in New Westminster on August 3, 1883 as Port Hammond Junction.
